The challenge proved a bluff

Brettstam dissmisses scientologist "offer"

" As solid as thin smoke in an autumnstorm"

So much for the challenge from scientologists PRO Gullevi Almgren about comparing psychiatry with Narconon treatment methods.

States chiefpsychiatrist Ulf Brettstam , who noted that Almgren in the debate restricted her offer of comparison to "any eventual comparison between psychiatry and Scientology should be expanded to a comparison between spiritual and non-spiritual methods" This said regarding the inflammable debate concerning the closely to the Church of Scientology , connected Narconon and its plans of a rehabcentre at Lättarp. Brettstam is unmerciful in his critics:

- Gullevi Almgren is constructing a non-existing conflict between the art of traditional medicin and religion and without any considerations to the involved, exploits from late events the tragic faiths of people when she use this batting on the cult of scientologys favorite hateobject -psychiatry. Simultaneously she is stating that the science of medicine is a religion amongst others. By this Almgren has succeeded , where others has failed, namely to bridge the gap between believing and knowing, psysics- metaphysics. Should Almgren in a clear way describe how she came to thie conclusion , she is propably in line for a Nobelprize, Brettstam says.

"Pyramidgame"

-About the discussion of the so called E-meter, an apparatus which, according to the National Encyclopedia, registers physiological reactions , by scientologists said to be able to decide if a person is free of mental blockations, Brettstam says as follows:

-The E-meter is a sensitive thing to the scientologists, because it is used on a regular basis within the giant pyramidgame in the Church of Scientology, where the players at the top is cashing in the big bucks. The members "audit" each other. The E-meter is used by "scientologists with the proper education that is required to get an E-meter of your own" according to Almgren. Oh yes, the ones that has paid their fees and is declared "clear" may then "clear" the newcomers. In this way the different levels is constructed and in practice a typicall pyramidscam. The mystique around the E-meter must be kept at all costs - if not the whole cardhouse might collapse. Any scientologist who wants a similar apparatus with even more avanced functions own can get one from me for about 44 usd:s .Blueprints for free. 100% guarantee or a full refund, Brettstam says.

He also states that a US District Court has condemned the E-meter because the books of Dianetics and Scientology contains false and fraudulent statements of medical nature and that the E-meter is proven without any whatsoever function regarding diagnostics, treatment or profylactic use. It can not better any bodily function of any kind in a medical or scientific way, Brettstam quotes.

Why is Almgren and others downplaying the connection between Narconon and Scientology? A swedish testimony explains why, Brettstam says:

-In an article in DN (Dagens Nyheter, the biggest morningpaper in Sweden) 1999-03-18 by Anna Bodin, a defector tells how he after years of ineffective treatment costing several hundredthousends, he decided to sue the Church of Scientology and how he and his family was persecuted by the "churchs office for special affaires". He had been sent by a socialworker to Narconon in Huddinge because of his drugaddiction problem.

He states that he had finished using drugs before he met Narconon , but agreat loyality to Narconon was created when he was there. Therefore he continued with courses in scientology with an auditor from Church of Scientoogy for seven years. The E-meter was frequently used to "clear" him from his "bodythetans". Despite the fact that he felt worse and worse , the "treatments" continued. A costly experience. At first he paid 50 000 which he borrowed, than another 80 000 on his fathhers lifeinsurancepolicy, berore he realized that he was totally fooled.

He then told higher ranked members of the church about his experiences and was immediatly recommended to buy new courses from them for another 85 000. In this way his failures should be corrected. This course lasted for less than a year, then the church wanted more money. By then the defector last his "faith".

- He tells how "scientologysailsmen" is swindles people to buy courses for several hundred thousends, how they work on provision and follows the buyer to the bank to borrow money. despite the threats from the church, he sued them in court. there was no trial because the church bought his silence for 50 000.

When the churched filed the written agreement in court, it became a public act, so anyone can control the veracity of the above stated. Brettstam returns to the question of Hubbards request for personal help whith his mental illness in the states in the 40:ties. Gullevi Almgren has repudiated this fact but Brettstam tells Almgren:

-Oh yes, it certainly was your master who wrote. He was specific about his adress and what school he was attending. Hubbard never got an academic degree, but called himself, among a lot of other things, PhD in Nuclear physics. Almgrens flat deny to this facts is the standard type answer from scientology when confronted whith less flattering facts about their "Guru" Brettstam says.

Protestlists

After the Narconondebate has been so flamable , the locals has reacted whith great concern. In Lättarp there is now a circulating protestlist signed by almoust every village man and woman. The protestlist is to be handed over to the municipal authoryties and to Länsstyrelse.

Alf Håkansson, head of the socialwellfare for adults says that the locals view regarding drugaddicts is frightening. He him self has not takien any stand regarding the Narconon treatmentcentre.
